PermalinkHunting For Trophies
As I had mentioned before, my brother and I would rent games and try to beat them before we had to return them. This was the very beginnings of my trophy hunting. Of course the original PS and PS2 didn't have trophies but it still got me started.

I played World of Warcraft for about 7 plus years, starting with vanilla and going through the Panda expansion. In that time, WoW had started an achievement system with "Feats of Strength". I found there was one in particular that I could get, given enough time and work. It's Over 9000! I set to work, getting as many achievements as I could. I remember getting a lot of weird looks from low level characters because I was grinding quests in the beginner areas when I was working on completing all quests in certain areas. After what seemed like forever and being frustrated with the kung fu panda expansion, I finally got the achievement I've been grinding and traded playing WoW for playing on my PlayStation's again.

I started looking at the trophies and going for them but I would get new games before I was ever able to fully complete any. Until Dawn was the first game I was able to platinum. It was short enough, easy enough, and really interesting. After meeting Noddy, I got more even more serious about trophies. Most recently, I've been working on cleaning up my backlog of games and raising my trophy completion percentage.

PermalinkThe Beginning
My love for video games began at my uncle's house. He had a Sega Master System. When my brother and I would visit his house, we would spend hours in the upstairs spare bedroom playing games like "Spy vs Spy", "Hang On & Safari Hunt", and my favorite "Ys: The Vanished Omens".

Playing "Phantasy Star" taught me not just why it's important to rotate save files but also saving early and often. We had played so far into the game and somehow got super stuck. We couldn't talk our way out, fight our way out or pay our way out... and we had just saved over the only save file we had.

We learned perseverance through playing "Rastan". We played over and over just to beat the first boss... then more and more to get to and beat the second boss. This is one game I'd love to pick up again just to see if I do better than I did when I was younger.

"Y's: The Vanished Omens" was by far my favorite game to play. It was a very simple, yet complex game. Talk to the towns people, buy gear, go out and walk into enemies. You had to make sure that you walked straight into the enemy and if worked best if you were able to sneak up on them. The more powerful the enemies, the better items you need. I remember there was one item that you could find near the beginning of the game that would net you a good amount of cash.

As I got older, I would go to my friends houses and we'd take turns playing on their Sega Genesis or Super NES. The game I remember playing the most was "The Pagemaster". We only got past the horror section of the game once and promptly died. It was great.

It wasn't until my brother was in Kindergarten that we got our first console. It started with him borrowing a Play Station from his class. After a few weekends of that, my parents bought us our own. We would go to the video store, rent a game and try to beat it before we had to return it. And this would all lead me toward trophy hunting, which I'll save for another blog.

Permalink25 Platinum Trophies
Now that I've earned a quarter to 100 platinums, I feel it's a good time to reflect on these trophies and the games associated with them.

I got my first trophy (on my own playstation account) in November 2015. "A Symphony of Horror Trophies" from Until Dawn (PS4). I love this game and being able to go through and see all the twists and turns was great.

In May 2016, I got my second trophy. Yes, for some reason it took me all that time. "Life Finds A Way" from LEGO Jurassic World (PS4). There's just something about the lego games that I just love. I do miss the old lego games where the characters only made gestures rather than actually talking but I'll probably keep playing the lego games until they stop making them.

June 2016 was my best month yet, I earned two platinums. "The Red thread" from Unravel (PS4) and "Have you ever tried Shawarma?" from LEGO Marvel Super Heroes (PS3). I really enjoyed Unravel, though I wasn't sure I would be able to get this platinum since one trophy was completing each level without dying. That was tough but I'm pretty proud of myself. Then we had a second lego game. I remember hating the flying parts of the game but overall, a decent lego game.

Then August 2016, a new personal best month for platinums, three in one month. "Complete Hero" from LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (PS4), "We Had Fun, Didn't We?" from Tales From the Borderlands (PS4), and "The Walking Dead" from The Walking Dead (PS4). I know what you're thinking, a third lego game. Yes, a third lego game. Why not. One of my buddies from work gave me this game in a trade. Then I moved on to the two Tell Tale games. I really like Tell Tale but these trophies felt a bit empty since all I had to do was play through the story line on each game.

Another new personal best month for platinums was achieved in September 2016. Four big ones. "Borderland Defender" in Borderlands (PS3), Borderland Defender Round Two" Borderlands 2 (PS4), "Lord of Ironrath" from Season 1 of Game of Thrones (PS4) and finally "Full Moon" from The Wolf Among Us (PS4). Shout out to Noddy for, not only helping me with these two Borderland platinums but for getting me to play them in the first place(since I had declared to never play Borderlands since the incident of 2009). The Game of Thrones Tell Tale platinum had the same slight empty feeling because, once again, this was a play through the story line to win trophy. However, The Wolf Among Us made me feel better, since it took a little bit more to earn.

It took me quite some time but in November 2016 I earned "Platinum Trophy" from Skyrim (PS4). This game took a little bit of skill and a lot of perseverance (which I have in spades, apparently).

December 2016, I had earned three trophies. "The Hero of Heroes" from Ratchet & Clank (PS4) and "My Name is Mayo!" from My Name is Mayo (PS4 and PS VITA). Ratchet & Clank gave me a little challenge but was mostly easy. Both My Name is Mayo games were super easy "press x to win".

I started out the new year with a bang. Six platinums in January. "Apex Predator" from Far Cry Primal (PS4), "Everything Is Awesome" from The LEGO Movie Videogame (PS VITA), "All Finished!" from LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 (PS VITA), "RESIDENT EVIL 6 Platinum Trophy from Resident Evil 6 (PS4), We Had Fun, Didn't We? from Tales From the Borderlands (PS3), and "OCD" from Day of the Tentacle Remastered (PS VITA). I decided to go for Far Cry Primal's platinum after seeing that my brother had the trophy. I checked out the trophies and it looked like it just took perseverance, which is something I have in spades. My favorite part of the game was taming pets. Once I got the bloodfang sabretooth, I knew I found my hunting animal for the rest of the game. The LEGO Movie Videogame had some challenging moments but overall, fairly easy. My cousin started LEGO Harry Potter on my vita, playing through the story, since she said she would appreciate it more than I would. As with most Lego games, this was a relatively easy platinum. The Resident Evil 6 platinum is the trophy I'm most proud of since it did take some skill. However, I'd like to give special shout outs to Noddy and Satay-Chicken for helping me with not only the trophy but completing the game 100%, DLC and all. It was a lot of fun. Definitely my favorite time with PvP. Did a quick second play of Tales From the Borderlands for a quick platinum. I really liked playing Day of the Tentacle Remastered. I grabbed it when it was free and had I known, I would have paid for it. It was an easy platinum, especially with a guide.

February 2017 was a rough month but I still managed to play through LEGO Jurassic World (PS VITA) and get "Life, uh... finds a way". I find it interesting to see how games change from console to console. This was no exception. This platinum was much easier to get than it's PS4 counterpart. I finished this one while I was in the hospital.

I took a break from gaming for a while but I'm slowly coming back to it. In July 2017, I earned "Memories Returned" from Amnesia: Memories (PS VITA). I had been looking at this game time and time again in the PSN store and I finally broke down and bought it. It's a pretty lengthy game. I definitely had to use a guide to sift through all the different option throughout all the stories. I especially liked the air hockey game.

August 2017 is not even halfway through and I've already completed two platinums "True Thievius Raccoonus" from Sly Cooper and Thievus Raccoonus (PS VITA) and "This Pattern is Mine" from Everybody's Gone to the Rapture (PS4). Sly Cooper was a fun blast from the past. I had played this game way back when it was on the PS2 but never beat it. I started the Vita version way back in February when I was in the hospital and finally finished it in August. Damn those slugs taking the computers... I had picked up Everybody's Gone to the Rapture and my brother downloaded it while he was visiting this past week. After wondering around the town for a while, we pulled up a guide and ran through the game in a number of hours. It was interesting but I still have questions about the story line.

I've had a lot of fun getting these 25 platinums and all the trophies that go along with them. Here's to 25 more great platinums!

PermalinkThe Gaming Mom
February first, I had a personal best trophy streak going (as well as being 31 weeks pregnant). On February second, I was sent to the hospital for tests and admitted due to preeclampsia, which promptly killed my trophy streak. It took a couple days to get my vita so I can work on more trophies but the streak was long gone (though I was still working on getting my trophy completion percentage up to 60% so it wasn't a total let down). On February 18th, I had my baby boy, 6 weeks early. The next 33 days was spent traveling to the hospital to see my boy and back home to rest and recover. I didn't have much time for gaming.

Over the past 5 months, most of my gaming came in the form of mobile phone apps during whatever spare time I could find. I'm looking to get back into console gaming on a more regular basis. I think it will still be a number of years before I make a try at a new personal best trophy streak, but I'm working on baby steps. I've heard people say that the best way to complete a goal is by writing it down first. I hope to one day get back to streaming but in the meantime, I plan on starting small and gaming for at least one hour each week. I also plan to get some more blogs going. Wish me luck!
