This is pretty much my "State Of The Hobby" update; as I discuss all the games I'm playing and considering for platinums.
So, since my last post I've managed to get some time with a few of the games I've been most excited for and I've not been disappointed at all. I'm hoping to get a few more platinums in the coming months but these aren't easy plats. This isn't going to be like when I got 'Life Is Strange' or 'Rango'; or hell even games like 'Horizon: Zero Dawn' and 'Spider-Man' which are still rather easy plats... no these will take some effort.
So, first things first; 'Shovel Knight: King Of Cards' was delayed by multiple months, which is a massive shame but I'm honestly not that bothered because it's actually a really packed time for me game wise, so I'd possibly struggle to find time for it.
On the platformer side; I've played 'The Messenger' now and it's a really good game. The platinum isn't overly hard, but it's not an easy game at all, so it's a "would like to have" plat at the moment. Then there's 'Hollow Knight' which I've still spent very little time with and want to properly delve into, it's just finding the motivation to tackle what is a rather skill intensive game. Another platformer I want to go back to and finish off is 'Axiom Verge', which I've beaten but I'd like to get the platinum for. Finally, there's 'Specter Of Torment' the sequel to 'Shovel Knight' which does have it's own platinum, though it is admittedly low value as few people have the version with the independent trophy list.
All of these are platformers I'd like to finish 100%, after all 2D platformers are kind of my thing... There's also my proxy platinum for 'Sonic Mania' which I've not yet finished. It's given me some more motivation to enjoy the game though which is nice.
But platformers aside, there's still a lot of games out there for me right now.
Since I started trophy hunting, I've been wanting to get the platinum for 'The Last Of Us: Remastered', it's one of the first games I decided I was going to plat. In fact it was one of the first three games I seriously chose to go completionist for, (alongside 'InFamous: Second Son', my first plat; and 'Shovel Knight' my second plat). It's still unfinished and that annoys me. I've decided to try and make it my 20th platinum. Which gives me 2 more games to finish before it; as it is a hard one... but honestly I'm no so bothered by completion order.
As well as that, pretty early on I decided I wanted the plats for 'Red Dead Redemption' and 'DmC: Devil May Cry'. These are two of my favourite games, so I need to actually get to getting them finished this year. Especially the former as PS3 games are at risk of being discontinued on PSN at any time now, especially with the sequel already out.
There's some games I'd like to go back to as well; specifically the aforementioned 'Horizon: Zero Dawn' and 'Spider-Man' as they both have hard mode versions for "new game plus", which is something I'd like to do for both games. I also want to go back and do the DLC for 'Horizon: Zero Dawn'.
There are a few more games that I loved but have very few trophies on. There's 'Monster Hunter World' which I'd like to get back into as I kinda burned out on it. Then there's 'Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends' which I have on Vita but I've also recently got the PS4 version as while it's fun to play on the Vita I think the PS4 version will be a better one to go for the platinum on, (though I'm not above doing both as they have separate lists, the PS3/Vita version shares a list).
Finally there's two games I've been meaning to get around to that are supposedly some of the best games on the system for my tastes. 'The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt' and 'Final Fantasy XV'. Both of these should by rights be games I'd adore and will likely be games I'll want a platinum in. I want to priorities these games...
All of this however is just the pre-amble to what is sure to be my next obsession. I've been playing a few racing games; namely 'Dangerous Driving' and 'Grip'. Both of these are fantastic games and make the PS4 the defacto racing game platform.
'Dangerous Driving' is basically a remake of the best parts of 'Burnout 3: Takedown', 'Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit', and 'Burnout 2: Impact'; it's glorious and may well be in my top 5 games OF ALL TIME. This is the game I wanted more than any other for literally years now. It's fantastic and I'm so pleased to have it. As for 'Grip', well what can I say. I was never a huge fan of 'Rollcage' on the PSOne, but this game is the realisation of that game in a modern era. It's a vehicular combat racing game with a hint of 'Mario Kart' about it but it's so much more skill focused. It's delightful. I'd like to platinum both personally.
There are other racing games on PS4 that I'd love to finish. 'Redout: Lightspeed Edition' is basically the PS4's answer to the 'F-Zero' series; and that's pretty cool. 'Wipeout Omega Collection' is also pretty damn good too. These I'm less attached to but I'd like to try and get the plats for them. The only I genuinely suspect is beyond my ability though is 'Polybius'. People thought it was impossible for a long time, but it's not it's just really damn hard. It'll be a challenge to try, but I won't be too cut up if I simply can't do it.
'Polybius' does open up the conversation of VR though, and there's two VR games in particular that I want to tackle. Namely 'Moss' and 'Astro Bot Rescue Mission', I wasn't expecting VR to be the next iteration of the 3D platformer but I welcome it. It's certainly going to be an interesting experience though I'll need to get a PSVR set before I can do that, and that might take a while.

The real big meat for me though is RPGs. The "looter-shooter" that is 'The Division 2' was a pretty safe bet for me and I'm legitimately loving it. I've got multiple friends planning to play it so that should make it a fun multiplayer experience. I really enjoyed the first (which I'd like to go back to in order to finish the DLC), and this one feels like a solid improvement in every respect.
The thing is, "looter-shooter" is really just a slight redressing of another genre that I've always loved ever since playing 'Diablo 2: Lord Of Destruction' on PC years ago. The dungeon crawler; that's what it's always been really. If you replace dragons and demons for terrorists in balaclavas it's a perfect fit. It's why the "bullet sponge" issue never bothered me. No-one complains when the dragon doesn't die in a fantasy dungeon crawler to only 1 or 2 hits, but when you head-shot a boss in 'The Division' and he doesn't die people get annoyed... "But guns are lethal", people retort... I put it to you, SO ARE SWORDS! It's an RPG, expect RPG mechanics.
My point is, dungeon crawlers are also my jam, and the unofficial 'Diablo 3' is one of the best games ever; not the official one, that was actually kind of a step back and overly casual in execution. No I'm talking about 'Path Of Exile' which is a game I WILL be getting the plat for, but it might take me all year and it's going to be HARD! It's currently a game worth over 20,000 TT points as the plat is so difficult and time consuming to get, but I know it's within my capabilities.
Yep, that's a single trophy worth more than 8,000 TT Points (at least at the time of writing), it'll likely go down considerably; but damn. This is going to be one of my Everest points, and it's only the beginning.
There are other games both dungeon crawlers and traditional A-RPGs and western RPGs all either out on PS4 or coming to PS4 this year. There's 'Titan Quest' and 'Victor Vran', as well as the official 'Diablo 3' all of which are games I may look to getting the platinum for. Though as I already have 'Diablo 3' on PS3, I'll likely just play it there.
These are only part of my upcoming western RPG binge. They're not out yet but there's a load of classic PC games being remade and remastered for PS4, which are some of the best and most impactful games in the genre. There's also a sequel coming for 'Pillars Of Eternity':Baldur's Gate: Enhanced EditionBaldur's Gate II: Enhanced EditionIcewind Dale: Enhanced EditionPlanescape: Torment - Enhanced EditionNeverwinter Nights: Enhanced EditionPillars Of Eternity II: Deadfire
These are all due to come out this year, and they can be added to the list of western turn based RPGs and strategy games I already have which includes the aforementioned 'Pillars Of Eternity', 'X-COM 2', 'Torment: Tides Of Numenera', and 'Divinity: Original Sin' 1 and 2:

Now admittedly this last section is more of a delve into a genre. I don't actually intend to necessarily get the platinum in 15 different Western RPGs... it'd be cool but it'd also be an excessive amount of time spent. The only one I'm definitely going for the platinum in is 'Path Of Exile', but I do want to look into all of these games. Next to 2D platformers, these old style Strategy-RPGs and A-RPGs where my jam and I'm really excited to see them all coming to PS4.
PS4 is now home to most of the best 2D Platformers, the best Racing games, the best Classic Western RPGs, and the best Modern Open World RPGs. What else can I honestly ask for? Sure I enjoy 4X style Strategy games on PC, like 'Civilization', 'Tropico', 'Cities: Skylines', and I've always had a soft spot for 'The Sims', but even most of those have serviceable PS4 versions now too. If the PS4 could run 'EVE Online', I think I'd barely ever use the PC for gaming any more... At this point the PS4 is the ultimate gaming machine for me and I'm massively looking forward to all the games I hope to platinum in the coming months.
I have 21 platinums I'd like to go for there, and that's not counting the additional 14 western RPGs I've listed. If I count them that'd be 35 platinums... but that's expecting a bit much. Still, I'm certainly not left wanting. There's loads for me to do, in fact the only reason I'm writing this now and not playing is to give my thumb a rest from the high octane racing. It's a good time to be a PS4 gamer.
