The Proxy Platinum
So... I've been playing a lot of 'Sonic Mania
' recently; it's a fantastic game and its frankly a travesty that it doesn't have a platinum trophy here on PS4. Sonic Mania Plus even adds new gameplay options, new levels, and new characters and there are ZERO new trophy associated with it. On top of that most of the trophies it does have are shite. They're obscure "find X" trophies rather than anything skill based. The only thing even remotely skill based are the trophies "Get any ending" and "Get all the emeralds" trophies, you can see below.
This isn't even close to good enough in my book. So I've decided that I'm going to create my own proxy trophy list. I have downloaded the PSN trophy whore game, 'Jack N' Jill DX
' and will be using this as my "proxy" for Sonic Mania; I am assigning myself tasks that I will complete and then collecting a trophy from this proxy to represent it. There are 15 bronze trophies and 3 silver trophies in 'Sonic Mania
'. I have all but three of them, and two of the ones I'm yet to achieve are the 'Blue Sphere' based trophies, which I actually really like.
Now as I already have a trophy for "Get any ending" and "Get all the emeralds" in the official list, I'm going to design criteria here for my 11 Gold trophies, in my proxy games list. Those trophies will be as follows:
- Get all the official trophies in Sonic Mania on PS4.
This will be the first trophy; effectively a way of tying them all in together. The next 5 trophies though basically write themselves.
- Complete Mania mode with Sonic, having collected all 7 emeralds.
- Complete Mania mode with Tails, having collected all 7 emeralds.
- Complete Mania mode with Knuckles, having collected all 7 emeralds.
- Complete Mania mode with Mighty, having collected all 7 emeralds.
- Complete Mania mode with Ray, having collected all 7 emeralds.
Next I'll add a couple of Encore Mode trophies.
- Get to the end of the game in Encore Mode.
- Get all 7 Emeralds in Encore Mode.
So that's 8 trophies set. For the last 3, I want to add a few creative challenges. Naturally, I love a good speedrun, so I'm going to set myself a couple of speedrun challenges. Saying that, I want this to be fun but also reasonably doable; so I'm going to use some other games I've played as a benchmark. 'Shovel Knight
' has it's speed run trophy at 90 minutes, yet according to speedrun.com the best runs are around the 42 minute mark. I'm no world class speedrunner, I managed to finish 'Shovel Knight
' in 87 minutes after extensive practice so double the world record standard rounded up seems reasonable so far...
To confirm this I've looked into other speedrun trophies. No-one is sure what the limit is for the 'Shantae: Half-Genie Hero
' 100% speedrun trophy, but most seem to think it's around 3 hours, while speedrun.com has that one listed and people doing it in around 1 hour 45 mins. Another game to use as a basis is 'Axiom Verge
' that set's it's speedrun trophy at 4 hours, while speedrun.com has people legitimately finishing the game in just shy of 50 minutes without using glitches. 'Steamworld Dig 2
' has another speedrun trophy where the exact time limit isn't known, but again people seem to think it's around 3 hours, and people on speedrun.com has legit finished this game in around 40 minutes... basically what I've learned is that speedrunners are bloody magic, (and games with exploration elements have more lenient speedrun trophies). But also that the 'Shovel Knight
' speedrun trophy is actually pretty locked down, most speedrun trophies allow three times the limit of what is generally possible.
Next thing to consider is that Sonic games are notorious for speedrunning. They whole game is designed around it and some of the things people can do are genuinely incredible. The original Mega Drive games have speedrun trophies on PS3, as you can see below.
These are really quite tight. I've not managed the second one yet, and only just managed the first, finishing in 38 minutes or so by my estimation, (hard to say as there's no in game timer). speedrun.com however has these games blisteringly fast, with 15 minutes being apparently possible on both games, which is frankly absurd to me. What that tells me though is that Sonic games are built for intense speedrunning and I'm probably never getting close to these.
After careful consideration I've decided on my limits. The standard Mania Mode speedrun record is just shy of 1 hour on speedrun.com for the base game, (so that means Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles only). And it's around 42 minutes on Encore Mode, with the consensus being that Ray The Flying Squirrel is by far the fastest option, but as Encore mode swaps characters around, I'll have to deal with what I've got... So I'm going to set the following speed run goals.
- Speedrun Mania Mode in Under 2 hours 30 minutes.
- Speedrun Encore Mode in Under 1 hour 45 minutes.
There are in game timers, so this should be relatively simply to track and I can use the options menu on PS4 to record my time at the end. So this gets us up to 10 trophies sorted.
For the last trophy, I'm going to use the Mean Bean Machine mode you can unlock in game, just because I want to give it some love and I want a fun quirky trophy.
- Beat Mean Bean Machine on the highest difficulty level.
That brings us up to a total of 11 trophies; and would unlock the new proxy platinum trophy for Sonic Mania Plus...
With me using the EU version of 'Jack N' Jill DX
', it is currently worth 1,172 TT Points (for what amounts to about 15 minutes of nothing). Adding this to the current 781 TT Points for 'Sonic Mania
' gives the game an effective TT value of 1,953 Points as of the time of writing. This feels far more reasonable.
I'll be interested to see what people think of the Proxy Platinum idea. I'm aware it will effectively tarnish my trophy list with a low grade trophy whore game, but I think it'll prove to be an interesting talking point.
