Human enemies in The Last of Us Remastered are part of various factions you'll meet throughout the game. Certain enemies come equipped with specific weapons and armor, including:

  • Melee enemies - these enemies tend to bum rush you and attempt to beat you down up close. When defeated, the melee enemies drop their equipped weapon, allowing you access to a fresh melee weapon if needed.
  • Standard firearm enemies - human enemies throughout the game come equipped with the various firearms available, from pistols to shotguns and everything in between. Depending on which difficulty mode you're playing on, firearm enemies may drop ammunition.
  • Armored enemies - some enemies come equipped with a full set of armor, including vests and helmets. Naturally, armored enemies can withstand much more damage than non-armored foes.
  • Molotov enemies - Molotov enemies have one attack, but it's very dangerous. They can launch Molotovs at your position which causes significant damage. You can easily spot Molotov enemies by their red shirts.

Infected enemies in The Last of Us Remastered are some of the most dangerous the game has to offer and provide challenges far different than the human enemies. Unlike most human enemies, the infected cannot attack from a distance (except for the rarely-seen bloater), so they rely on up-close attacking. What they lack in long-distance ability they make up in speed and power. The infected enemies come in four stages of infection:

  • Stage 1 "Runner" - Runners, as their name implies, rely on their speed to close the distance between you and them. They are recently-infected, so they still closely resemble humans. They also still have their sight, so you'll have to keep that in mind when trying to sneak around them. They rely on strength in numbers to overwhelm you, so be careful and watch your surroundings to ensure you aren't surrounded. Though they still have their eyesight, they CANNOT see your flashlight, so feel free to keep it turned on when fighting the infected.
  • Stage 2 "Stalker" - Stalkers are rare; you'll only run into them a couple of times throughout the game. Stalkers are in the second stage of infection, so they look less like humans but still have some characteristics. They tend to run around in the shadows, darting in and out of cover until they charge at you. Stalkers can easily overwhelm you if you allow them to surround you. Stalkers are more blind than the Runners; however, they still have their eyesight. Combining that fact with their speed makes the Stalkers a challenging adversary.
  • Stage 3 "Clicker" - Aptly named due to their tendency to make clicking noises to detect their prey, Clickers are some of the most dangerous enemies in the game. They are completely blind, but they make up for that with their exceptional hearing. On higher difficulty modes, Clickers can still hear you if you sneak around unless you move as slow as possible. Once they've detected you, Clickers will charge you while swinging their arms wildly. If they catch you, it's an automatic game over unless you have a shiv available. Even then, if you're low on health, the shiv may not help. Therefore, it is best to keep your distance from Clickers as best you can. If your aim is true, go for the head; they can absorb a lot more damage than any other enemy, aside from Bloaters.
  • Stage 4 "Bloater" - You won't run into Bloaters very often during your journey, for good reason; these enemies are without a doubt the most deadly in the game. Representing the fourth and final stage of infection, Bloaters are vastly larger than any other enemy in the game. If you find yourself in the grip of a Bloater, your game is over; there's no escaping their clutches. They can take a lot of damage, so they'll tear through your ammunition rather quickly. They also have the ability to throw pods at you from a distance, damaging you while standing in the resulting cloud of spores. Thankfully, you can avoid most Bloaters throughout the game by sneaking by them, with the exception of two particular scenarios.

Weapons in The Last of Us Remastered range from pistols and rifles to shotguns and even a flamethrower. Each weapon has its strengths and weaknesses. Weapons are acquired by finding them at certain times on your journey. The firearm weapons, in order of availability in the game, are:

  • 9MM Pistol - Your starting firearm, the 9MM Pistol is certainly the weakest weapon, but it also is the one you'll use the most, especially during the first half of the game. Ammunition is more prevalent for this gun. You'll definitely want to aim for the head when using this weapon as most enemies will require at least three hits to the body before dying.
  • Revolver - The Revolver is more powerful than the 9MM Pistol, but it reloads slower and has a smaller clip capacity. After fully-upgraded, the Revolver becomes a one or two-hit killing machine, depending upon the enemy.
  • Hunting Rifle - The Hunting Rifle is very useful once found. It has the ability to zoom in, allowing you to aim much easier. It's slower to load than most weapons, but it can do some serious damage, even without upgrades. Once fully-upgraded, the Hunting Rifle can even one-shot kill a fully-armored human enemy.
  • Bow - The Bow is harder to use than the firearms, but if aimed properly, it becomes one of the most deadly weapons in the game. Hits to an enemy's head (except for human enemies equipped with helmets) results in an instant kill. Enemies that are unaware of your position take much more damage, so standard humans and Runners can fall to the Bow in one shot even with hits to the torso. If an enemy is killed with a headshot, there's a slight percentage of recovering the arrow next to the fallen enemy.
  • Shotgun - Weak at long range, but absolutely deadly at close range, the Shotgun is vital in protecting yourself from enemies crowding around you. The Shotgun defeats most enemies up-close in one shot, so it's an absolute must-have in tight situations. It's slow to reload, however, so make sure you've got it fully loaded before heading into a firefight.
  • Shorty - The Shorty is a fantastic weapon, as it allows you the power of the shotgun, but in a more compact form. The gun is considered a pistol-type weapon, a fact that allows you to have two powerful weapons available at the same time; the Shotgun and the Shorty. It's weak at long-range, so use it the exact same way as the Shotgun.
  • El Diablo - An extremely powerful weapon, the El Diable is another pistol-class weapon that deals heavy damage but has a slow rate of fire and a slow reload speed. Even without upgrades, this weapon can eliminate most (unarmored) enemies, but once fully upgraded, it can take out any enemy in one shot, except for the Bloater.
  • Flame Thrower - The Flame Thrower is found late in the game. It's powerful and can help you out in a pinch, but it's best saved for Bloaters due to their sensitivity to flame. Of course, it can shred through regular enemies with ease, so feel free to use it at your leisure.
  • Assault Rifle - The Assault Rifle is found only near the end of the game. It cannot be upgraded, but even in its default condition, the Assault Rifle is a fantastic weapon. It has a fast rate of fire and causes significant damage.

There are also many variations of melee weapons you can find throughout the game. They all cause similar amounts of damage and have differing levels of durability. The available weapons are:

  • 2 x 4 - One of the earliest melee weapons you'll find, it does decent damage, but is limited to four hits in its default condition and without Traning Manual upgrades. It can be upgraded with nails from the crafting menu.
  • Baseball Bat - Similar to the 2 x4, it is much more durable, allowing for six hits before breaking. It can be upgraded with bladed components from the crafting menu.
  • Pipe - The metal pipe weapon is the most durable of the three blunt weapons, allowing for a generous nine hits before breaking. It can be upgraded with bladed components from the crafting menu.
  • Machete - The machete is a one-hit weapon, but it is limited to three uses. It is also much rarer than the blunt melee weapons.
  • Hatchet - The hatchet is another one-hit weapon that allows for five total uses before breaking. It's one of the best melee weapons in the game, but it's extremely rare.
  • Shiv - The shiv is a multi-functional weapon. The shiv can be found rarely throughout the game, but most of the time you'll be creating them using the crafting menu. They are useful in escaping from clickers, instant stealth kills, and accessing shiv doors. It's always a good idea to have some on hand in both emergencies as well as for accessing the aforementioned shiv doors. There's a useful glitch that allows you unlimited shivs if you have the right components.

Finally, there are a few projectile (thrown) weapons the game has to offer. These weapons are very helpful to clear out large groups of enemies or avoiding taking damage in a firefight. The available throwable weapons are:

  • Molotov Cocktail - The Molotov Cocktail is an incredibly useful weapon that allows you to kill large groups of both human and infected enemies with one well-timed throw. You can find them occasionally throughout the game though you'll more often make them yourself in the crafting menu. They are also very helpful in dealing with Bloaters. Be careful not to damage yourself with your throw!
  • Nail Bomb - The Nail Bomb, like the Molotov, is very useful, especially as crowd control. It can take out most enemies with one explosion if they are close enough. It also has the added bonus of being used as a trap; it can be placed on the ground and will detonate once an enemy comes near it. It can cause you damage as well, so be careful if you're standing near the explosion.
  • Smoke Bomb - The Smoke Bomb does not cause damage, but it is highly useful in causing chaos and allowing you to escape some serious difficult firefights. Not only do enemies not fire into or through the smoke, but any enemies caught in the smoke can be stealth killed, even from the front. You won't find many out in the word, but you can easily craft them from the crafting menu.

Within the word of The Last of Us Remastered, you'll be able to find bottles of supplements hidden in rooms and containers. These supplements are used to upgrade certain abilities and characteristics of Joel. These upgrades range in usefulness as well as cost, but every upgrade will help in your survival, especially on higher difficulties. Unlike weapons, skills can be upgraded at any time by using the backpack menu. Each upgrade has multiple levels with each successive level requiring more supplements. The upgrades include:

  • Maximum Health - Arguably the most important upgrade, maximum health increases the amount of damage you can endure before you game over. On higher difficulties, this upgrade is negated due to the about of damage enemies cause, but on lower levels, this upgrade is massively handy.
  • Listen Mode Distance - Upgrading the Listen Mode distance allows you to detect enemies further away when using Listen Mode. This is useful if you tend to rely on Listen Mode, but is completely unavailable if playing on Survivor or Grounded difficulty.
  • Crafting Speed - This upgrade isn't really very useful. Most of the time, you'll be crafting in between enemy encounters, so crafting speed won't be much of an issue. The one exception would be the need to craft an emergency medkit in the heat of battle.
  • Healing Speed - Similar to crafting speed, this one isn't very useful. Once again, healing doesn't take long to begin with, so try saving this upgrade as one of the last.
  • Weapon Sway - Upgrading this reduces the amount of movement of your gun when aiming. This upgrade is important as it ensures your aim is true, helping reduce ammunition usage.
  • Shiv Master - The Shiv Master upgrade allows you to defend yourself during a clicker attack and is the only way of escaping from the clutches of a clicker.

Weapons in The Last of Us Remastered can be upgraded in various ways, depending upon the weapon. Upgrades are performed at workbenches you'll find in various locations along your journey. While skills are upgraded with supplements, weapons are upgraded using parts scattered all over the game. Upgrades range from reload speed and clip size to rate of fire and armor penetration. In order to upgrade to high levels, you'll need to find five different toolboxes in the game. See the Collectibles Overview page for more information.
