After beating the story, the first Free Play-esque tasks you should handle are the eight dojos scattered around the island. You can find these dojos using the 
button to get to the world map.
Dojos
You need to earn the gold medal on all of the dojos to get the Gold Bricks and characters associated with them, which is important for some abilities for other free roam tasks. If you're going after these after beating the story and having all of your abilities at full power, you should make quick work of all the dojos and should be done with them in about an hour less.
You do not need to earn the stud bonus for getting the highest score rank. The Master of the Dragon scroll is your reward for completing the dojos, which lets you perform Skyward Dragon attacks whenever you want. Combos will be a non-issue.
