Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD Edition Walkthrough

11. Extra Ops 097-128

Here lie the end of the vehicle missions, as well as the AI Weapon Battles and the Monster Hunter crossover missions. The vehicle battles play out just as the ones in the previous page do, with the Fulton Launcher and Bandana being the prime tools of choice to use. But for AI fights, you'll have to give it your all and damage that AI Pod as much as possible; you have to S Rank Extra Ops 119 to actually get the Bandana Design Specs, so you'll really need to just deal with it and develop as best equipment as you can for those fights. Having a Co-Ops partner with the Infinity Bandana would help out a lot for the AI Weapon Battles.

To unlock Extra Ops 121-128, you'll have to listen to all of Chico's briefing tapes, which will be available to you after beating Main Ops 33. It might be best for you to just listen to some tapes as you're eating some food or something so you're not just sitting there, listening to him talk about UMA's. After you've listened to all his tapes, replay Extra Ops 029 and head to Playa del Alba, where you'll find a talking cat from the Monster Hunter series named Trenya.

You should be coming across this mission before taking on Peace Walker Custom to get the M47 Design Specs, so here's how you do it. Once you've got the Fulton Mine developed, as well as Lv5 Fulton Recovery Systems, you'll be able to extract a total of 33 people without calling in a support marker for more mines. You should really get the Neo Moss Camo before trying to S Rank this mission to massively decrease your chances of being spotted.

There are 28 enemies to extract here, and they come in groups of four from behind you. For the first group that starts out in the open, toss a smoke grenade at them and crouch-walk over to them, plant a mine and then detonate it with a Hush Puppy round. As more groups come from behind, stay hidden by staying flat on the ground or leaning up against a wall until they pass by, and then throw another smoke grenade and repeat the process. Once all 28 are extracted without you being noticed, the commander will reveal himself. Use either the Fulton Launcher or the Mk. 22 to knock him out, and it's mission complete.

If you don't want to spend 15+ minutes on this fight, I highly advise you develop the M47 and the Infinity Bandana to save yourself some time. Before you fight Peace Walker Custom for an S Rank, you really need the M47 missile launcher (unlock path is on the first Extra Ops page) as well as the Battle Dress w/Helmet and the best RPG-7 and Support Supply Marker you can carry. These will be vital to your success; the M47 reduced my clear time from a B Rank 25+ minutes to the S Rank time of 13:44 (well under the time limit), so make sure you develop it and bring it with you. It's advised that you practice on Peace Walker Type II first, so you become a bit more familiar with the fight. Chaff grenades won't work to stop Peace Walker's EMP field, let alone work on any of the Custom AI Weapons, so you'll just have to wait it out if it happens. Make sure you call in support strikes before you actually run out to prevent yourself from becoming a sitting duck. This mission is overall one of the most difficult in all of the Extra Ops, but the reward for an S Rank is by far the most useful item in the game, allowing you to finally S Rank vehicle battles with ease.

As always, aim for the AI Pod, and learn the attacks from battling Peace Walker Type II if necessary. If you have some friends or can get a session together, having multiple people can really make a difference in how fast you beat this fight.

Extra Ops 121: Hunting Quest: Rathalos

Isla del Monstruo

For your first monster hunting fight, you'll need a to be properly prepared. You should have the Battle Dress w/Helmet by now, as well as a Lv5 Hush Puppy, preferably at Usage Lv3. Don't even bother with the Fulton Launcher, because it only does about 5,000 of actual stun damage at Lv5 at Usage Lv3. The Hush Puppy at the aforementioned levels does about 2400 stun damage per shot, being much more effective at putting Rathalos to sleep.

There are four velociraptor-looking monsters, Velociprey, running around trying to attack you as well as the main target Rathalos; I suggest knocking them out as well (it'll only take one or two shots) so they're not constantly on your tail as you try to shoot down Rathalos.

Rathalos Wing: To maximize your odds of getting the Rathalos Wing (necessary for creating the Tanegashima Musket, which is related to a trophy), develop the M134 machine gun and take it with you for this mission on non-S Rank runs. Fire at Rathalos' wings and head until you see visible signs of damage, and then shoot the tail until it comes clean off. Then, once all four of these body parts are damaged, put Rathalos to sleep with the Hush Puppy. Doing all of these things reportedly takes your odds of getting the Rathalos Wing from extremely small to about a 33% chance, which is the highest it can go. With enough tries, you'll eventually get the wing and can develop the musket. You won't have to worry about the other monsters, you can kill them if you like, but the odds are slightly better when you do this on Extra Ops 122.

The same strategies apply to fighting Tigrex as they do Rathalos; shoot him with the Hush Puppy until he's out cold. Tigrex doesn't fly, so he's going to be running on the ground a lot. This means you'll be getting knocked over a lot, which can be frustrating. If you ever think you'll run out of food items, take supply markers with you (even though you should have the Bandana for this) so that Mother Base can send you some more rations and curry.

Tigrex Fang: To get the next drop item, you'll have to do the same kind of thing you had to do to Rathalos to maximize your chances. The same strategies from the previous two monsters apply to Gear REX, just fire away at it until it passes out. Gear REX's attacks are much easier to dodge in the clunky battle dress than Tigrex's (thank goodness), so you won't be getting knocked around nearly as much. To make up for this Gear REX's attacks are slightly more powerful, so be sure to stock up on the best food you can bring with you.

Gear REX Mucous: Like Rathalos and Tiger before it, Gear REX's monster drops are most easily obtained by causing significant damage to its four body parts, and you get a bonus for tranquilizing it. These four body parts are the back spines, the head, the tail, and the little red blob on Gear REX's laser-thing. This monster drop gives you the first schematics for the second half of the human slingshot CO-OPS weapon, so if you manage to find three other people who want to see how it looks, you can do so if two others have obtained Tigrex Fangs for themselves after you get the Gear REX Mucous. Extra Ops 128: Gear REX Strikes Back

Mother Base: Deck

This particular Gear REX is so strong that its charge attack will kill you in one hit if you're not equipping food. It takes about 20 M47 missiles to kill this one lethally, which is saying something considering the previous ones were not nearly as difficult. Because of this massive change, you'll need to go about knocking this one out with a different strategy.

You're going to want your Hush Puppy to be as strong as possible, as well as your stun grenades. If you haven't gotten the Swim Trunks frome Extra Ops 067, I suggest you do that now so you can use them for this fight. You should also have the Bandana already, and you'll want it in your first item slot (it's the only item you need to bring with you) so you don't have to switch to it. That's all you'll really need, just those four things; any attack from Gear REX will kill you anyway, so you don't need to bring any food items. What a contrast from the heavy Battle Dress from the other monster missions.

As soon as the fight starts, toss a stun grenade underneath Gear REX, and then switch to your Hush Puppy and pelt him with rounds nonstop as you back away to a safe distance. Always expect Gear REX to charge, and be ready to run out of the way when he does. When he stops moving, toss another stun grenade underneath him, and hit him with tranquilizer rounds again. Repeat this process for about 7-10 minutes (hopefully not 10) and eventually he'll go down. There are a few things to look out for though, the first of which are the spikes he ejects from his back onto the deck. Stay away from these at all costs, because when he roars, the effect is shared by the spikes, stunning you for as long as Lv5 stun grenades can stun Gear REX. Being stunned by him in this way is basically a game over. The laser attack is also an instant kill, so always run to the left and roll to avoid it. Avoid it like the plague. There's nothing more frustrating in this game than to be over eight minutes in this fight just to be scratched by the edge of that laser.

Gear REX Super Extract: To get this, you'd have to break the body parts of Gear REX and tranquilize it for another bonus to add to the chance of getting the last of the monster drops. Trying to bring a stunning weapon as well as the M134 calls for either one of two things: the first is to wear an outfit that makes you slower, making you more susceptible to attack; the second option is to learn the timing on when to throw stun and sleep gas grenades at Gear REX to prevent him from being any threat whatsoever. Doing this with multiple people will make it easier, of course, but you could also just not bother with the tranquilizing bonus and destroy the body parts using only the Swim Trunks, the M134, and the Bandana. All methods are equally frustrating, as they require a lot of work that won't guarantee the drop, and messing up will in most cases cause a game over, in which you will have to start over again. Developing the weapon you get from obtaining the Gear REX Super Extract isn't related to any trophies, and you'll most likely never even see the human slingshot in action unless you get a session of people together, with two people who've obtained the Tiger Fang and one who has at least the first of Gear REX's drops (the fourth person is the ammunition, of course). Unless you really want to get 100% in-game completion, it might not be worth the frustration.
