    "Toys to Life"...

This is one of the most interesting and ridiculous genres of games (if you could call it a genre) you have the originator (Skylanders) and it's various incarnations, Disney Infinity and it's "sequels", the barely qualifying Nintendo Amiibo, and the latest entry LEGO Dimensions.

I'll say that my first entry into the concept was Disney Infinity (DI) 1.0 on the Xbox 360, That was followed by DI 2.0 on the PS3, then because of a good deal and wanting to expand my character collection for a reasonable price DI 2.0 on the Xbox 360, and that was followed by DI 3.0 on the PS4... I'm invested heavily into the DI Ecosystem (I have all but 2 figures from 1.0, All the figures from 2.0, and I'm waiting for the Light Tech figures to get too deep into 3.0)

I mention all of that to emphasize my opinion that LEGO Dimensions is by far the best example of this genre that could have been created.

First, TT, WB, and LEGO have backed that the starter set from this year would maintain the franchise for the next several years. Second, and I feel this is the most important factor, These are the first entry into the "Toys to Life" that includes actual toys... every previous series has made lovely vinyl figures that are great shelf dressing but hardly toys.

The game makes the assembly process in the real world a part of the game. From building the portal to read the figures to the vehicles and gadgets that come with (The Batmobile) or that are purchased separately.

This is a trophy site so I'll jump into that aspect first... Yes, You can platinum the game with just the starter pack, but, You will not be able to (even from day one) be able to 100% the game with just the starter pack. This is because the $30 (US) Level packs each have their own set of trophies. I have no need to fully 100% this game (not possible as I'm not a Simpsons fan and that's one of the first 3 level packs) but the level packs functionally add 2 segments... a Story level (covering 2-3 areas similar to the story levels) and a hub world similar to the free roam area of any given LEGO game prior. While the hub worlds are smaller than that of a game like LEGO Lord of the Rings, they have all the fun and much less frustration in some aspects.

The game is HUGE and will continue to expand through at least the beginning of next year.

    Pros:
    - Gameplay perfected over a long series of LEGO games
    - Many well known franchises with more to come
    - best use of the toys portion of the genre so far
    - Sets to build rather than figures to display
    - Building the set is a part of the game so you'll have time hands off from the controller
    - Story mode that takes you through all the franchises announced for the game
    - Building sets announced appeal to those with the money to afford the game for themselves (Doctor Who, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, Jurassic World, Portal 2)
    - No completion percentage

    Cons:
    - Starter and sets are pricey for the genre
    - you will spend time looking for the piece under other pieces or on the floor
    - Building the set is a part of the game so you'll have time hands off from the controller
    - Building sets for some less crucial franchises are used for switches with no other options (Ninjago, Chima)
    4.5

Prem-aka-PrinceRead the whole review, well written, thank you for that! I was worried it would not cover enough about the core game after you spent so much time talking about the background and DLC (with good reason), but I can't think of anything not covered in the pros/cons list. Laughed when I saw the one that is both a pro and a con.
Always good to see more honest reviews, upvote from me music

boldfox85Great review. It is a shame that Disney owning Marvel and Star Wars (and presumable Indy) means those franchise's characters don't appear in the game but they did a great job, and yes it is a way easier completion than before. Having no 100% style trophies is a huge timesaver.
