2. Dragon Age: Inquisition General hints and tipsUpdate notes

The best tip I can give out for playing through Dragon Age: Inquisition is take your time and enjoy. This game is going to take you a long time to play, and the enemies do not scale to your level. So get out there and explore. Do side quests, and level up before touching any of the main story missions. So here are some tips to help make your nightmare playthrough a little easier and earn you this pretty trophy in the end:

  • Inquisitor

Starting With the Right Build

Before the game even really begins, you get to customize your character. The choices you make here can either make or break your nightmare run. If I'm being honest, only 2 battles in this game ever gave me any real trouble, but the first one happens to be right at the end of the prologue. So if you're looking for a bit of an easier time, I'd say either roll your Inquisitor as a Rogue archer or go with a Mage. It should be noted that Dwarven characters cannot pick the mage class. Other than that restriction, race doesn't have any impact on your character's stats. So for me, I always played with a Human Archer. It makes it easier if you need to run from battles since you're usually already at the back of the group, and you can pack quite the punch later on if you choose the right class specialization. On the other hand, a mage who goes with the Knight-Enchanter specialization can be quite the beast on the battlefield as well.

It's also important to note that one missable trophy requires you to romance another character in your playthrough:

So if you have someone in mind that you already want to romance, you need to make sure that you're picking the right race and gender for your character. It would be horrible for you to be spending all of your time flirting with one of your companions, only to get 1/3 of the way through the story and be told "Sorry, but I just don't dig you". So with that in mind, here are your options for getting your sexy time on:

  • Cassandra - Male Inquisitor Only
  • Dorian - Male Inquisitor Only
  • Blackwall - Female Inquisitor Only
  • Sera - Female Inquisitor Only
  • The Iron Bull - He's not picky, he loves EVERYONE!
  • Josephine - She's not picky either, she loves EVERYONE
  • Cullen - Female Human or Elven Inquisitors Only
  • Solas - Female Elves Only

You also need to become friends with at least three people in one play through. So if you wanna be a dick to everyone, then you're not going to be able to get all of the trophies in one play through. You need to play nice with at least three people. So either be nice to everyone, or at least pick 3 people that you can be civil with and do what you want with the rest so that you can get this trophy:

Nightmare Run Tips and Tricks

The hardest fights I had in this game were the prologue fight with the Pride Demon and a fight later on during the story mission "In Your Heart Shall Burn". Seeing as the Pride Demon fight is right at the beginning of the game, it really is important to make sure that you're playing a character build that you like and can be successful with. This is why I always end up choosing the archer at the beginning. You start the game off with just you and a Warrior tank and end up picking up a Rogue Archer and a Mage before you get to the prologue boss fight. I found for most of the game, I really didn't need to use the Tactical Camera for fights, but in some sticky situations, it can really come in handy.

So here are some of my quick tips for getting through a Nightmare run:

  1. I really wanted to play with some of the other characters, but I found it just easier to play with Cassandra as a sword/shield tank, Dorian and Vivienne or Solas as the other party members. I went with an Archer/Assassin. Stealthing as an assassin and then using Overdraw is just a beast.

  2. In some tough areas, I'm mainly talking about main story missions, because you are locked into them once you start them. Make sure you are fully stocked before you start the mission at the war table. I'm talking about grenades and rejuvenation potions. If you do not stock up on these before story missions, you are SOL and will not be able to have any on you! This can mean the difference between a very easy mission and a very difficult mission.

  3. In story missions, make sure to heal up (if you have any potions left) before you click on the resupply crates. Also, you should pick increasing the amount of health potions you can carry as soon as you can as an inquisition perk.

  4. In some areas that are difficult, if your characters are starting to go down and you're out of potions, you can have your character stealth and run away into an area you have already cleared. If you run far enough, your 3 other party members will revive back by you, and even if their health is low, you can send them back in to damage the enemies. The enemies do not regenerate health. I think this is my biggest tip. This saved me on numerous occasions.

  5. Make sure you are the right level for the mission you are about to start. At the war table, it will give you the suggested level for starting that mission. If you're playing on Nightmare, make sure you are at the higher end of that range. If the mission is recommended for a lvl 8-10, then go do side missions and stuff until you are closer to 10. Heck, you can even over level and make the story missions even easier if you want. If you are going for the full completion, then there is a ton of side stuff you need to complete anyway, so you might as well get to it.

  6. The Nightmare trophy is for finishing the "main" campaign on Nightmare mode. This does not mean that you have to get the trophy for killing all 10 high dragons etc. while still playing on nightmare mode. When the final story mission is over, you will end up back in Skyhold and can continue on with any side mission that you please. As soon as you kill the big baddie at the end, the trophies for completing Nightmare and Hard will both pop, assuming you never ever changed the difficulty level. The only side missions that you get blocked from are romance related ones and companion related ones. So by all means, complete the main missions, and get back to Skyhold. After the credits, make a save. Then switch to Casual if you like, and go to town on those dragons or whatever else you have left to do.

  7. Finally, if you make the right decisions, in some story missions, you can skip the boss fight completely, or get some nice help at least wink!
