Deep Black is one of those games that has some bad qualities in the areas that count but at the end of the experience, I just can't bring myself to say that it was an overall bad game. I did have way too much fun playing it and it held my attention for too long for me to say so.

See, I have a philosophy (so to speak) about third person shooters. I split them up into 2 categories while has rules for each: mindless shooters and story driven shooters. Mindless shooters...to make up for the bad or lack of story telling, should be no longer than 4-5 hours and have solid to over the top action. Story driven shooters...in addition to having a great story and strory telling, have the minimum it requires to be considered a "good" shooter. Deep Black definately falls into the mindless shooter category. The problem with this game is that it completely violates the rules of being a good mindless shooter in my book. The game is 8 hours way too long and its a mediocre shooter at best. Seriously, when I played through the first act of this game, I kept questioning if the trophy for completing it was bugged or something because it was so long. The other major problem that I had was the moody and inconsitant difficulty spikes through out the game. You'd have some areas where all you have to do is take cover and headshot a bunch of guys but then within the very same level, you can come across a part that's incredibly...no like old school hard to get pass. These very challenging encounters was something that I did like about the game and it held my attention but I just didn't like how inconsistantly they appeared. I found the weapon variety and the underwater portions to be amongst the best parts of the game. I think the game oversold itself as an "underwater shooter" since you spend about a good 75% of the game on land...still the underwater areas are done nicely. While underwater you can do cool stuff like reprogram enemy drones to become friendly AI and harpoon enemies who are above water to where you are and melee kill them (Scorpion style!). STAY AWAY FROM THE MULTIPLAYER! These have got to be the worst servers that I have ever played on. For starters, I had to boost the multiplayer trophies because literally no one is playing this game online. Secondly, I had to port forward my PS3 to my router just to maintain access to the servers. Lastly, my boosting partner and I had to reboot our routers serveral times just keep being able to enter into games with each other!

The story is a jumbled mess. All I can tell you is that you're playing as a Black Ops specialist named Lt. Pierce who ends up finding out that he's been sent out on a false mission to kill terrorist. This somehow ends up involving a homicidal AI program and an alien nuclear weapon. Yeah...a mess! So after all this...why was I still entertained at the end of the day? Because I like to laugh! And the deathcries of the enemies when you kill them on this game, made it all so worth it. I have never seen a game where when you shoot an enemy in the head or melee kill them, they scream like they are getting ass raped. It has to be one of the funniest things I've experienced when gaming, LMAO! So there is some truth to the age old saying, "Laughter is the best medicine".

    My Breakdown:

    What's Good:

    - The visuals were great
    - The enemy death cries were HILARIOUS
    - Wide variety of weapons at your disposal
    - The underwater sections were done nicely
    - Can be VERY difficult at times

    What's Not-So-Good:

    - Not enough underwater combat
    - The controls felt sluggish and everyone else seemed faster than you
    - Some voice acting was better than others

    What's Bad:

    - Inconsistant difficulty level
    - The game was WAY too long
    - The multiplayer was the worst that I have ever played
    - The developers seemed like the didn't even try to put together a conherent story

In all, I cannot really recommend this game in good conscience to anyone BUT I will say that the single player campaign isn't that bad. There's really no reason to download this game but if you do, it's "ok".
