diveThe Bean Dive is back for 2019!!!!dive

Hi! Sam here, content editor for TGN, welcoming you once again to the joyous stupidity that is the annual(ish) Bean Dive, invented by noted gaming luminary Beanpotter.

Look at all those unstarted games you have! Shame on you! Have you no willpower to stop yourself from picking up all those bargains? No, me neither. Let's start them all at once in a mental community event and absolutely tank our completion percentages! laugh

Listen. You've had years to recover from your last official Bean Dive on TT, so it's high time that you put your completion percentage on the line again in the name of doing a really silly thing.

The Bean Dive 2019 Hub is where you need to go to start your dive. There's also a helpful thread here which is a list of games and suggested quickest trophies in each. It's... er... wildly out of date thanks to the Bean Dive's extended leave of absence, so please make sure to contribute more quick dive suggestions!

The functionality of the hub and how to take part in the event are pretty much the same as previous years, as well as the sister event on TA. Here's the basics:

When is Bean Dive 2019 happening?
Officially, Bean Dive day is the 7th of July but we'd like as many people as possible to start on Thursday, 4th of July 12:00 noon UTC and, if you can't start then, the 'Event' will continue until the 15th of July 12: noon UTC. You can still start a Dive after this point but it won't be included in the event stats.

NOTE: Due to our scanner issues, the Bean Dive will now start on July 12th at 12:00 noon UTC and continue until July 22nd at 12:00 noon UTC.

What is a Bean Dive?
The idea invites you to put all those backlog games you own onto your tag by popping a single trophy in each (or try to pop an absolute minimum), so you can stop pretending that they don't exist. You can read more about the original idea here.

What’s the point?
The idea behind it was to force you to play all those games you picked up in a sale or just never got around to playing. It also destroys your completion percentage. Hopefully, you'll take up the challenge to get it back up to it's pre-Dive glory before the next Dive rolls around. (You may accidentally get more than one trophy but this is ok.)

How do I join in?
-To start your Dive, simply press the Start My Dive button on the event page once the event begins.
-This instantly starts Dive tracking and captures your stats at that exact moment.
-When you start your Dive a 'Dive Started' message will appear in your feed.
-ALL trophies in new games earned while Diving will be grouped into a single, expandable item on your feed.
-You'll see a new 'Dive Summary' box on the right side of your home page, giving you various Dive-related information.
(The Friend feed items and Summary box can all be turned off, if you want, by editing your Site Settings.)
-All Dives will have their own Bean Dive page on the site which lists changes in stats and lists all the games Dived.
-When you finish your Dive, go to that page and click Finish my Dive
-You'll get a 'Dive Finished' message on your feed, listing the number of games Dived and the completion percentage drop.
-As you recover, you'll get milestones to say how far you've come and, when you return to your pre-Dive completion percentage, you'll get another feed message to congratulate you.
-Be absolutely sure you've finished your dive before you press the FINISH button as all recorded stats will be reset if/when you decide to start another.

What milestones do I get?
Your Bean Dive recovery milestones will depend on how many trophies you require to recover your Dive. It works like this: -
If you require less than 100, you get a single recovery FF message at 100% recovery.
If you require 100 - 249, you'll get 2 recovery FF messages, one at 50% recovery and the other at 100% recovery.
If you require 250 or more, you'll get 4 recovery FF messages, one for every 25% of recovery.

I've finished my Dive and want to do another one
You ridiculous fool! But, OK, you can start another by clicking the Start My Dive button again but, to stop people from spamming Dives, you'll be limited to 4 a year.

More than 1 trophy popped when I started playing, does it still count?
Yes. Although the idea is to pop as few trophies as possible and then move on to the next game, we know there are certain games where you can't help but pop multiple trophies when starting it. Just try and keep it to a minimum, for maximum effect. 5 or more will prevent the game from being included in your dive stats.

Is there a minimum amount of games I need to make it a Dive?
No, not really, but to make it worthwhile, I'd say make it at least 10 if you can. You can only 'Dive' games you've never gotten an trophies in before. So, you cannot 'Dive' DLC if you've already gotten trophies in the main game.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Beanpotter reminds all Divers this event is one of the stupidest things ever, but is still proud of you.dive

Glad to see it's official this year, last year's felt lonely dive.

Just to let you know, the link to the hub isn't working - it redirects to the home page.

I have a quick question, in the description for the hub page it says "Sign up now to start your bean dive and grab yourself a community challenge badge!"

Is there an upgrade for the community challenge badge in this event or not? I don't see anything in the hub or the FAQs.

If anyone dives Umbrella Corp holla at me and I’ll be more than happy to boost it with anyone!

I'm wondering this as well, as one of the few "Circle of Taste" 6/6 Community Challenge members. wink

[another 6/6 here] I do not see this statement on the hub page, the FAQ or anywhere else, a Google search turns up empty, and a DuckDuckGo search points to the hub page. So apparently the statement once was there, but has since been removed.

Question if I finish my dive after the 22 will it still count or do I need to have everything dived by then? Didn’t realize some games took so long to earn a trophy.

I'm wondering this too. Does everyone's dive end on the 22nd or some other day?

More generally, what happens if we start a dive but never end it?

Also, over at TA, it was confirmed that the Bean Dive counts as a Community Event, not a Challenge.

That said, done, with nine games dived. In contrast to previous dives, I restricted myself this time to games which I am reasonable certain to actually play in the near future.

How to trophies from non-dive games work? I earned a few from my ongoing XCOM Plus game between starting and ending the dive. And my completion percentage by the time I finish my dive games could be lower or higher than if I played them exclusively. Is the intent that you only play your dive games till they're done?

Stopped at 16 games. Was starting to get down to games that i may not want to invest time in, and wanted to actually play some of them. :)

I didn't realise they were doing this for trophies too! I already did 300 games for the XBox one, so I think I'm too burned out for this, but may dip in on the weekend.

Wow, what a crazy few days. Finally hit my 100 and done popping! Time to get to work! Excited.. the vast majority of my Bean Dive is the remaining PS3 and Vita games I have, really want to complete them before the upcoming next gen. Threw in a few PSVR and PS4 games to help remind me what current gen looks like laugh. Goal is to get my % back by March 2, 2020 (gotta focus on FF7 Remake the next day!!!) Hope everyone enjoys their refreshing dive! dive

It's all relative. If you only have say 7 games on your profile, and you've got the platinum on 5 of those games, and 40% completion on the other 2. You'll have a total completion percentage of 82.8% on your profile... If you then dive 10 games, getting 1 trophy in each game (which averaged at about 3% completion), you'll be dropping to 35.9% completion on your profile. Because it's all about ratios.

The more games you've played the more games you need to dive in order for it to make a difference, however, the higher your completion percentage is to start with, the less games you need to dive for it to make a difference. It's why even though I dive 50 games I only dropped my completion percentage by around 6.11%, because I tend to complete around 30% of my games and I had almost 200 games on my profile before I started. So loads of games, but low completion percentage means game didn't effect my dive any where near as much as they would other people... if I had started and left unfinished less of my games, or finished more of the games I started, the dive would have had a greater impact.

Good old relative statistics.

Am I able to still add games to my Dive? I thought it was supposed to stop at midday yesterday but it added a new game I played in the evening.

If so I’m happy because I’ll be able to creep up to 50 games.
