Greetings Xth Squad. I decided to put a FAQs and tips topic together to try to help others in their gameplay. Hopefully some of you find it useful.

    FAQs

Q1. When can you create additional party members and how much does it cost to do so?
A1. You start the game with a single character before proceeding through a short sequence, somewhat similar to the starting sequence in Demon Gaze. After that you are given a full party of 6 characters and then just a few short screens of dialogue after that you are able to create your own characters at no cost. Only the 6 starting characters come with equipment so make sure you unequip their items before creating your own.

Q2. How is leveling done in this game?
A2. Like the dungeon crawlers before this you'll gain experience as you kill enemies in the dungeons. Once you have enough experience to level, which you'll know when you have enough as the "Lv" part on a character's portrait at the bottom of the screen will start to pulse red, return to Hinowa Academy and then go to the Medical Lab and select Rest. There are 3 options available, Charge (only restores MP), Full Care (restores HP and MP) and Relax (restores HP/MP and cures exhaustion), which all cost depending on your level, 1x level, 10x level and 100x level respectively. The cheapest option, Charge, is all you need to select to level. Your HP and MP will be fully restored and you'll gain 1 point level that you can distribute into your character's statistics. You cannot level without doing this.

Q3. Since this game is heavily influenced by the Wizardry series are there any cross-class skills?
A3. No. In Operation Abyss all skills are tied to what's called Blood Codes, which are essentially the classes in this game. In fact, the game actually somewhat penalizes you for switching Blood Codes as you must level your new Blood Code higher than your previous one in order to gain any points to distribute into your statistics, as mentioned in Q1. So for instance, if you decide to switch the Blood Code on a character that was previously built for magic and decide to make them a Warrior then they'll likely be weaker than just starting a new character who is focused on being a Warrior from the very beginning. It's true that the existing character would have more HP than the newly created one but a new character built for being a Warrior would quite likely have more HP in with half the levels, or less, of the character who switched Blood Codes.

Q4. What are the differences between Basic mode and Classic mode?
A4. The differences are purely cosmetic, literally. Basic mode lets you pick a portrait for your character whereas Classic mode lets you customize your character by choosing from 2 avatar types, then selecting Mask, Skin Color, Hair Style, Hair Color, Face 1, Eyebrows, Eyes, Mustache (if male), Mouth, Face 2, Nose/Jawline, Ears, Body Type and Uniform. The most basic version of this is stated at the beginning of the game when you actually have to choose which mode however there is 1 other difference that is not stated and it's that your equipped items will be reflected on how your character looks in Classic mode but not in Basic mode.

Screenshots are linked below with Basic mode first (Roto Kujo) and Classic mode second (Okamoto Kazuki). As you can also see, the way your party is displayed at the bottom changes between modes as well.

Q5. Are there any Blood Codes that are required or highly recommended to have in a party?
A5. Healer and Academic. A Healer gets the healing spells obviously. An Academic is the Blood Code that provides the buffs and debuffs. The Academic is also the character that disarms traps in this game, quite the oddity given it's pretty much always the thief/assassin type characters that do it. The Academic can also identify items for you in the dungeon. You can also pay to have items identified back at the Academy. Finally there is the Magician. They are the offensive spell caster as well as the Blood Code that casts Enfloat which allows you to levitate. However you can also buy Enfloat items from the Development Lab for 500 GP that will do the same effect so it's entirely up to you on whether or not you want to have a Magician or not.

    Crafting and Boosting Equipment
    1. You can boost a piece of equipment 1 time per level of the item. For example, the starting equipment all have item levels of 1 and require Blood Codes be level 1 or higher to equip. Therefore they can be boosted 1 time. A longsword has an item level of 2 and can be boosted 2 times, and so on.

    General Observations
    1. Speed (SPD) seems to have the same purpose as the Agility stat in Demon Gaze so if you have a dual wielding character you'll need to boost Speed to increase the damage with the off-hand weapon.
