Well, Mandarin is already the most widely spoken language in the world, so, wouldn't make much difference.
Only if you factor in native mandarin speakers. English has it beat when you factor in all people whom can speak it. Both have over a billion people whom can speak them though. The mandarin set is predominantly only spoken by native speakers as opposed to english which is more widely spread out across many countries. It's even a requirement in some schools in countries where english isn't even a native language. Japan recently started doing that but they don't require the teaching of mandarin despite both hanzi and kanji being derived from the same set of characters.
To sum it up: most people that speak mandarin are from China and live in China. Most people that speak English aren't from England and haven't even been to it. English is more spread out globally than mandarin.
So yeah, major difference.
Personally, I think we would all benefit being bilingual or trilingual but even my stubborn ass only speaks one language and I don't even speak it that well.
