PlayStation 4 Slim Officially Revealed At New York Event

By Brandon Fusco,
Sony has held their Future of PlayStation meeting, and officially revealed the PlayStation 4 Slim. It's important to note that while the console is colloquially known as the "PS4 Slim", Sony uses slim simply as an adjective describing this new model, rather than working it into its official name.

It is worth mentioning that, at least from the perspective of the images shown, the controller doesn't appear to have a forward facing light similar to the model that Eurogamer uncovered a few weeks ago. While this appears to be the case, note that it's possible that it's just not visible from the angle shown, or that the images aren't perfectly representative of the final product.

The new slim model will 30% smaller, 25% lighter, and 34% more power efficient than launch model PS4s. It will retain many similar parts, including the 8GB of GDDR5 memory, AMD based Radeon graphics (1.84 TFLOPS), and an 8-core Jaguar CPU. It retains many other features as well including two USB ports, an AUX port, an ethernet port, Bluetooth 4.0 support, and IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac wireless support, though it is important to note that the original model's optical audio port has been dropped. In addition, it will support High Dynamic Range video over HDMI, a feature that will be added to all PlayStation 4 consoles with a firmware update coming soon.

This new PS4 will be made available starting on September 15th for 29,980 yen, $299 USD, €299 and £259 with a 500 GB Hard Drive. A 1TB Hard Drive model is listed at 34,980 yen, which equates to about $349 USD.
