TT Gaming Stats - June 22nd to 28th 2015

By Rebecca Smith,
This report is for the period June 22nd to 28th 2015.

A plethora of new releases, including several retail titles, has managed to shake up the charts this week. They've also had quite an impact on the big numbers as the new releases have encouraged gamers to pick up a controller again. There was a 66% increase in the number of players that started games and a 59% increase in the number of games started. There was a slight increase in the number of gamers that were completing games as well as in the number of games completed. There was a 13% increase in the number of gamers that earned trophies this week, as well as a 42% increase in the number of trophies won.

• 5,533 TrueTrophies gamers started a total of 7,945 games between them (1,200 different games).
• 1,262 TrueTrophies gamers completed a total of 1,848 games between them (730 different games).
• 9,497 TrueTrophies gamers won a total of 157,155 trophies online between them (32,768 different trophies).

Now for the surprise. Virtually every major genre sees a drop in the TT score earned this week. The possible reason for this is that the earlier trophies in a game are of a lower ratio than the later trophies. More people earning lower ratio bronze trophies is likely to create a lower score than less people earning higher ratio gold trophies. The main points that I will make, though, is that we see Puzzle drop out of the chart completely to be replaced by the Music & Rhythm genre for the first time. We also see Racing overtake platformer, likely due to the release of MotoGP 15, Riptide GP2 and the PS+ version of DRIVECLUB.

Lets take a look at the platform tables.

Playstation 4

As was to be expected, the new releases destroy the Games Started and Trophies Won charts. By far the most anticipated release of the lot, Batman Arkham Knight, gets a clean sweep in Trophies Won and gets top spot in the Games Started chart with more than four times the number of starters than the game in second place, DRIVECLUB. The other two new releases to enter the chart are Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition and J STARS Victory VS Plus European in third and tenth places respectively.

The Games Completed table tells a very similar story to last week. As few people managed to race through the new releases, we're left with either just a few re-entries and repeat titles. Both Never Alone Kisima Ingitchuna European and Never Alone Kisima Ingitchuna re-enter the chart. While the European version can only be blamed on the continued influence of Playstation Plus, the North American version was included in this month's Flash Sale. Otherwise, the somewhat easy completion of Infamous First Light returns to the chart again.

Playstation 3

With no notable new releases, it's left to the influence of Batman Arkham Knight to make a difference on the Playstation 3 charts. A new game in an existing franchise always generates interest in the previous games in the series. There is no better example of this than the re-appearance of all three retail Batman titles in the Games Started chart. Fallout 3 also continues to hang on after the announcement of Fallout 4.

Sonic the Fighters reappears thanks to Sonic's 24th Birthday sale in North America and, probably, because it is known as an easy completion. The latter reason puts the game in first place on the Games Completed chart. Recent release Steins;Gate (EU) (PS3) continues to hold on in third place with a steady rate of players completing the title each week. LEGO Jurassic World PS3 makes its first appearance in the chart but, other than that, the rest of the games seem to be random easy or quick completions.

DLC dominates the Trophies Won chart. The release of the third episode of Tales from the Borderlands sees all seven of the DLC's trophies appear in the chart. The remaining three spots were taken by one of June's PS+ titles, Call of Juarez Gunslinger.

Playstation Vita

I wonder what these charts would look like if we removed the PS+ titles? As usual, they're dominating the Games Started and Trophies Won charts. The only new release to make an impact is Persona 4 Dancing All Night Japanese, which hits the Games Started chart in sixth place -- not bad for a game that is only available in Japan. Otherwise, sales account for the latest titles to appear in the chart. Both Hyperdimension Neptunia ReBirth1 and Sword Art Online Hollow Fragment appeared in June's Flash Sale.

Unlike the other Persona titles, the latest release must be a fairly easy completion. Of the 12 people that started the title, four also managed to complete it. The rush to complete Destiny of Spirits before the servers closed on June 30th saw seven people manage to complete that title too, earning it fifth spot in the chart. The rest can only really be described as random.
